The Sonoma Valley branch of the Northwestern Pacific went through a succession of names and gauges and even a short time as a mono rail. It was never heavily patronized for any length of time but it was the key which opened the door to the economic development of the Sonoma Valley. It also had a competitor which laid its track in parallel. The Southern Pacific branch to Santa Rosa via Sonoma Valley brought the produce markets of the east to the farmers of Sonoma County.
